The bride and groom have many of their closest people stand up with them at their wedding but, the tradition goes back centuries when it comes to bridesmaids and groomsmen. The friends of the groom would be protected the bride and her dowry and escorted her to the wedding. On some occasions the friends of the groom would help him kidnap the bride if her parents did not approve of the marriage.
When it comes to the bridesmaids, things have not changed much over the years. The matron of honor was there to help the bride with her preparations for days leading up to the wedding while the bridesmaids helped the bride get dressed on the day of the wedding. Another interesting thing that has been passed on down the years is that the bridesmaids and groomsmen would dress similarly to the bride and groom however, back in the day it was to confuse evil spirits who might want to bring harm to the new couple.
Now the bride and groom have the people who know them best. Their best friends, siblings, and those they love dearly stand up and help celebrate the happiest day of their lives with them!
